The Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence recently filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The gun control group, led by former representative Gabrielle Giffords, accused the Trump Administration of failing to release documents that show the National Rifle Association’s communication to administration officials.
Gifford’s husband, retired astronaut and retired Navy Captain, Mark Kelly, is the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in Arizona’s special election.
The ATF is refusing to respond to two separate Freedom of Information Act requests.
The requested information would show whether the ATF has been influenced by the NRA and pro-gun lobbyists, and, if so, how much that influence impacted the ATF to pursue “dangerous policies and to oppose common sense gun-violence-prevention measures”.
Robyn Thomas, executive director of the Giffords Law Center, stated, “The Trump administration appears willing to let the National Rifle Association dictate its federal gun safety policy, which includes remaining silent on how to stem our nation’s gun violence epidemic.
Protecting the safety of Americans should be the top priority of any president. Unfortunately, gun lobby profits seem to be more important to President Trump.”
Donald Trump has been a vocal supporter of gun rights since he began his campaign for the presidency.
None of our leaders, including Trump, have made any real changes to try to stem the tide of these tragic incidents, except offer their thoughts and prayers to the survivors of these horrific occurrences.
Our politicians think about these families long enough to post on Twitter, or get an appropriately somber sound bite, and then move on with their lives.
Maybe the ATF is resisting releasing the requested information so that the American public won’t find out just how much our politicians are profiting off the gun deaths of our people.
