Attorney General William Barr Had a Miserable Interview with Wolf Blitzer on CNN

Attorney General Bill Barr recently appeared on CNN and it was very evident why he rarely gives TV interviews outside of Fox News.

Barr, who was interviewed by Wolf Blitzer, opened the interview by making some unfounded claims about the surrounding details of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and closed the interview by trying to give merit to Trump’s ridiculous claims about how mail-in voting will make the election results fraudulent. Even Blitzer seemed shocked by how lackluster Barr’s arguments were…

The whole show was a spectacle and proves how the top law enforment official in the country is now basically a campaign dummy for the president.

When Barr addressed the August 23rd shooting of Blake, Blitzer had to correct him on some of the facts. But that didn’t stop Barr from continuing.

Barr said that Blake was “armed”, which implied that the officers would have had reason to shoot him (SEVEN TIMES IN THE BACK) but there has been no evidence that he was brandishing a weapon, even with a knife being found in the car later.

Blitzer pushed back on that fact, saying, “His family says he wasn’t armed… There may have been a knife in the car, but he wasn’t armed when he was shot. That’s what his family and his lawyer said.”

But Barr continued, “Well, I stated what I believe to be [the case].”

Barr then went on, unpersuasively, to argue that systemic racism is not an issue with police violence against Black men. He insisted that “the narrative that the police are on some, you know, epidemic of shooting unarmed Black men is simply a false narrative and also the narrative that that’s based on race.”

Barr somehow insisted that even though many studies have proven otherwise. Barr’s comments show just how unserious he is about addressing racial unrest in America.

But Barr’s comments just continued to go off the rails as he pushed the false narrative about mail-in ballots.

Barr’s interview happened just hours after Trump encouraged voters in North Carolina to test the system by voting TWICE – which is felony voter fraud.

Blitzer said, “It sounds like he’s encouraging people to break the law and try to vote twice.”

Barr replied, “I don’t know what the law in the particular state says,” which prompted Blitzer to point out that “you can’t vote twice.”

“I don’t know what the law in the particular state says,” Barr replied. “If you know what he’s saying, why are you asking me if you’re saying.”

“You’re the attorney general of the United States,” Blitzer said.

Trump was trying to convey that he believes mail-in voting sets us up for voter fraud but in reality, a number of states already conduct elections nearly entirely by mail and have shown that it is safe – not only safe from fraud, but also allowing for actual physical safety for voters during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Washington Post’s Greg Sargent believed Barr’s defense of Trump was “telegraphing his willingness to legitimize Trump’s eventual effort to try to invalidate untold numbers of mail ballots, which Trump has already told us is coming.”

Blitzer tried to get Barr to give evidence that mail voting would lead to as much fraud as Trump claims but he couldn’t.

Barr was even unable to answer Blitzer’s straightforward questions asking how many people Barr’s DOJ has indicted for voter fraud. The interview ended with Barr making an pretty unpersuasive argument that China is a bigger threat to American elections than Russia, particularly since the intelligence community has found otherwise.

Barr said, “I’m not gonna discuss that… I’m not gonna get into that.”

Barr’s willingness to use his office to do Trump’s bidding comes as no surprise. He’s been doing that for quite some time.

Vox’s Andrew Prokop said that while Barr is not quite “a well-oiled machine that does President Trump’s bidding immediately at all times,” he has proven he’s “unafraid of criticism that he’s acting politically to help the president or his friends”:

Barely a month after Barr was sworn in, he released his misleading spin on special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings a month before the report itself. His Justice Department decided Trump’s request that Ukraine’s president investigate the Bidens wasn’t worth investigating, and other federal investigations into Trumpworld appear to have fizzled out. Barr personally instructed prosecutors to weaken their sentencing recommendation for Roger Stone, and he is trying to have the case against Michael Flynn dismissed entirely. He instituted a new rule requiring his personal approval for any investigations into presidential candidates or campaigns. And he’s attempted to place loyalists into key US attorney posts, such as the Southern District of New York and the District of Columbia.

Barr’s appearance on Blitzer proves he’s unfamiliar with important facts facing American voters this election and more interested in just repeating Trump’s talking points.
