In a move that will surely bring a huge blow to his anti-insider status, President-elect Donald Trump has named Elaine Chao – the wife of Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell – to a high-level cabinet appointment.
Chao, who is a former Secretary of Labor under George W. Bush, and former Deputy Secretary of Transportation under George H. W. Bush, was tabbed as Trump’s Transportation Secretary.
Because of her marriage to the Senate Majority Leader, Chao will be faced with a rare conflict of interest. According to CNN, “At the Transportation Department, Chao would have a key role in helping Trump get an infrastructure spending bill passed through Congress and start government-backed works projects — a role likely to be complicated by her relationship with McConnell, who will also be a critical player in any infrastructure bill negotiations.”
Chao is the latest in a string of appointments both to Trump’s transition team and his cabinet that have been in direct opposition to one of his primary campaign promises, to “drain the swamp.” Now we will wait and see whether this unprecedented insider appointment will cause any of his hard-core supporters to second guess their trust in a proven liar — and their vote.
