Failing Donald Trump Just Accidentally Admitted Another ‘Yuge’ Lie about Comey’s Firing

For those of you still tracking President Trump’s perpetually evolving narrative about what exactly possessed him to fire former FBI Director James Comey — the move that paved the way for Robert Mueller and the special counsel investigation — you’ll want to mark this one on your bingo card.

In May 2017, Trump famously told Lester Holt in a televised interview for NBC News:

“When I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story. It’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.’”

Trump also said that he had been planning to fire James Comey for some time and would have done it anyway, even if Comey had not been investigating his campaign’s ties to Russia. The president went so far as to call James Comey a “showboat” and a “grandstander” as though either of those are bad things by Trump’s standards — which is perhaps the least self-aware insult this president has lobbed at anyone.

When asked by Lester Holt whether he was angry with James Comey prior to firing him (regarding the then-newly opened Russia investigation), Trump swerved that question by saying he just wants someone who is “competent.”

Also, in the same two minute span, President Trump highly praised Rod Rosenstein. The Deputy Attorney General has long been considered high on the list of Most Likely To Be Next Fired By Donald Trump.

It seems hard to keep Donald Trump happy, especially for extended periods of time. Those who seem to have mastered that particular art have a habit of finding themselves indicted for a laundry list of reasons.
