While speaking to journalists at the Toronto Film Festival to promote his new film “Suburbicon,” George Clooney also talked politics, and conservative media outlets in particular.
Clooney, who is an ardent Democrat and human rights activist unleashed, with a special focus on Breitbart News — which was founded by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon — and to which Bannon has returned after being fired from the Trump administration.
Entertainment Weekly reported that Clooney told journalists at TIFF:
“I like picking fights. I like that Breitbart News wants to have my head. I’d be ashamed 10 years from now if those weaselly little putzes, whose voices are getting a lot higher every week as this presidency starts to look worse and worse weren’t still [after me.]” Steve Bannon is a failed screenwriter, and if you’ve ever read [his] screenplay, it’s unbelievable. Now, if he’d somehow managed miraculously to get that thing produced, he’d still be in Hollywood, still making movies and licking my a‑‑ to get me to do one of his stupid-a‑‑ screenplays.”
Following his comments at the Toronto Film Festival and before Steve Bannon had time to sit down with Charlie Rose for his 60 Minutes interview, Clooney had gone in on him once more. He told the Daily Beast, “Steve Bannon is a pussy,” said Clooney. “Steve Bannon is a little wannabe writer who would do anything in the world to have had a script made in Hollywood. He wrote one of the worst scripts I’ve ever read—and I’ve read it. His fake Shakespeare-rap script about the L.A. riots. Oh, you’ve gotta read it! It’s just fuckin’ terrible.”
The script Clooney is referring to is The Thing I Am, which was a hip-hop musical loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus” and set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Daily Beast managed to unearth the script and… it’s as bad as it sounds… if not worse.
“You choose. To act and die—or lie ’neath whitey’s boot!” the gang-member version of “BRUTUS” declares, standing on a chair, “talking trash, shouting to be heard.”
“Die, die, die!” the crowd roars back.
I’m not sure I could live through reading the entire script, but this scene is sufficient evidence of Bannon’s sub-optimal writing prowess, as well as his racism.
