The House of Representatives just passed a bill that affects how employers may choose to pay wages for workers who work overtime.
And Democrats are furious. None voted for the bill; six Republicans joined the Democrats in opposition.
The bill allows employers the option to give workers paid time off for overtime hours work rather than paying them the typical time-and-a-half cash wages. Republicans call the bill the Working Families Flexibility Act, and say it will allow employees more flexibility in their lives, suggesting that time off might be a preferred method of payment.
Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R – Washington) was one of several House leaders speaking in a press conference earlier today, “I don’t think there’s anything more powerful than giving them more control over their time so that they can make the best decisions for themselves and their families.”
CNN reports that Democrats are strongly opposed to the law, “Their chief concern is that employers have the final say on when comp time can be used, which means bosses can defer compensating employees for overtime work.”
Democratic superstar Elizabeth Warren called the bill a “disgrace.”
With working families across the country scraping to make ends meet, Congress should strengthen protections for workers – not gut them.
