Latest Round of Jeff Sessions Lies Could Land Him Some Major Prison Time

Perjury is when one lies under oath during a hearing or tribunal.  If one is found guilty of perjury, the guilty party can be imprisoned for up to five years.  This information is relevant, given recent testimony that proves Jeff Sessions, Attorney General of the United States, committed perjury.

During an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Democratic Representative Ted Lieu discussed Sessions perjury, stating:  “He lied under oath at least twice and most recently, both Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, based on their testimony and their statements, they show that Jeff Sessions contradicted himself when he said he was not aware of any campaign official talking to the Russians”.

During senate hearings, Sessions said that he hadn’t seen anything that would lead him to believe that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia in any way and that he didn’t remember hearing of any meetings between campaign officials and Russian officials.  Yet, Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, former foreign policy advisers with the Trump campaign, dispute Sessions’s testimony.

Page told House investigators that he had told Sessions about a trip Page was making to Russia during the 2016 Trump campaign.  Papadopoulos said that Sessions was present at a meeting in which Papadopoulos suggested that he could arrange a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.  George Papadopoulos has of course been indicted and pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about Russian tampering during the 2016 Presidential election.

So now we have Jeff Sessions, the highest ranking law enforcement official in the United States clearly caught lying under oath.  Al Franken and Patrick Leahy, both Democractic members of the Senate judiciary committee, have asked the FBI to investigate whether those lies are examples of perjury.  If the FBI decides Sessions did in fact commit perjuy, and he is charged with the crime, he could face up to five years in prison.
