President Donald “Make America Great Again” Trump has just won the right to hire 70 foreign workers at his Palm Beach resort, Mar-a-Lago. Last year, the resort employed 64 foreign workers for the winter season. That upswing in numbers correlates with Palm Beach County as a whole. Last year, employers in the county were granted permission to hire 1,844 for the 2016-2017 season. This year that number has risen to 2,159.
The workers are brought from overseas on what is called an H-2B Visa. This particular visa allows employers to hire temporary foreign workers for non-agriculture work or services on a seasonal or intermittent basis.
During a 2016 Presidential Debate, US Senator Marco Rubio questioned Trump’s hiring of foreign workers for his buisnesses. Trump’s response was that many hotels do the same thing because it is “very, very hard to get people”.
The unemployment rate in Palm Beach County, which fell to 3.6% in September, seems to back up Trump’s claims. A different picture is painted by Tom Veenstra, spokesperson for CareerSource. CareerSource is a non-profit job placement agency. According to Mr. Veenstra, they “currently have 5,136 qualified candidates in Palm Beach County for various hospitality positions”.
Donald Trump ran for office because he wanted to Make America Great Again. He has stated that “it’s time for a new policy, one defined by two simple rules – we will buy American and we will hire American”. This same man has stated his intentions to build a wall on our country’s southern border to keep undocumented immigrants from entering the country, and has tried to ban immigration from countries with heavy Muslim populations.
President Donald Trump doesn’t want to hire American, and he doesn’t care about foreigners who enter our country, as long as those people are here to line his pockets. When someone says one thing but does another, there are words for that. One word is hypocrite. The other is liar. President Donald Trump appears to be both.
