House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has issued a strong warning for Democrats: Win the majority this November – IN EVERY STATE DELEGATION – because in January the House could be called on to decide the election.
Here’s the rundown on why it’s important to win the majority in every contest possible- In the event that the election’s outcome drags out and is not decided by Jan. 6, the decision goes to the House but not just a straightforward vote that would be made easy if Dems have the majority of seats over all.
No, in THIS vote, every state gets a single vote and that vote will be determined by the party that has the majority of members from each state.
Obviously this is a rather unlikely scenario but Pelosi addressed it nonetheless. She wants to move money to House Democrats’ fundraising arm, House Majority PAC, to help sturdy the campaign funds in crucial battleground districts.
Pelosi sent a letter via email, saying, “We cannot leave anything to chance. House Majority PAC is doing everything it can to win more delegations for Democrats… It’s sad we have to have to plan this way, but it’s what we must do to ensure the election is not stolen.”
Pelosi said she was inspired to write the letter after comments made by President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania as he floated the possibility of Congress deciding the outcome of the election.
Pelosi said on MSNBC, “I’ve been working on this for a while, I’ve been working on almost every scheme he might have to steal the election, Anything we do to increase our numbers in the House, whether it’s state delegations or members of Congress wherever they are, will help us hold the House and enlarge our size, win the Senate and elect Joe Biden president of the United States on Election Day — or the few days that it takes to count thereafter.”
But Trump, of course, was referring to the CURRENT state representation in the House. In 26 states, Republicans represent the majority of House members and Democrats have the majority in 22 states. Michigan and Pennsylvania are tied.
Since 1804 and the ratification of the 12th Amendment, Congress has only been called on twice to intervene in a presidential election and the most recent of those was in 1877.
But these are extraordinary times so Pelosi is asking Democrats to prepare accordingly.
Pelosi stated in the letter: “Simply put, this strategy to protect our democracy and elect Joe Biden will take an all-out effort and resources. I’m asking you to help with this delegation strategy as well.”
This year’s election has been made more complex by the coronavirus pandemic and many more voters will be voting by mail which means a greater chance that things may not be so clear the night of the election. And given changes to state voting laws, there is also a higher chance of litigation this year,
Trump has also fueled the fire by saying he won’t agree to concede if he loses.
