Obama Steps Up to the Plate with a Truly Presidential Response to Latest Mass Shooting; Reveals Trump’s Impotent Leadership

Thoughts and prayers.  Thoughts and prayers.  Thoughts and prayers.  It seems like every few weeks in this country, people are sending thoughts and prayers to those who have been killed, injured, and involved in a mass shooting.  The latest incident was a shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.  Twenty people were injured and 26 people were killed.  In a church, where people literally go to think and pray and worship.  And all most people have done for the victims and their families is offer more thoughts and prayers.

Former president Barack Obama, while offering still his condolences to the families, took a slightly different approach.  Obama tweeted following the mass shooting, asking God to “grant all of us the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence and weaponry in our midst”.

I’m a bit of an anamoly:  a liberal Christian living in the southeast United States.  I believe that God can and does hear our prayers, that God can and does help us when we ask for it.  But I also believe that God helps those who help themselves.  Every time a mass shooting occurs in this country, we all send our thoughts and prayers.  Yet we DO nothing to prevent these terrible, violent, horrifying crimes.

There’s one particular prayer, well-known to Christians and non-Christians alike, that comes to my mind when another mass shooting hits the news.  Its called the Serenity Prayer.  The beginning of it goes, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; Courage to change the things I can; And wisdom to know the difference.”

When we send our thoughts and prayers to those impacted by a mass shooting, I don’t think any of us are asking to be able to just accept that these things happen.  And, as Obama tweeted, we do have the wisdom to know that we can change the likelihood that more mass shootings will occur.  What we need now, is the courage, and the wisdom, to change the things we can.  We need weapons reform.  No liberal I have ever meet wants to completely do away with gun ownership.  But now, I am praying, that we have the courage to take the steps we need to in order to be able to insure that this type of tragedy never occurs again in our country.
