Republican-Controlled Senate Judiciary Committee Sends Clear Warning to Trump about Mueller

In May of 2017 Robert Mueller was appointed to head the Special Counsel investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election of the United States. Needless to say, President Donald Trump has taken this investigation in a rather personal matter.

Since Mueller’s appointment Trump has been scheming for some way to have him removed from his newly appointed post. After catching wind of Trump’s desire to have Mueller removed the Senate Judiciary Committee decided it was time to let the President know where he stands.

In September of this year the Senate Judiciary Committee met to discuss two separate bills that were proposed by both Democrats & Republicans in order to protect Mueller. The committee overwhelmingly supported both bills – choosing sides in this battle with Mueller and not Trump.

The general concern has been that Trump would find any possible way to be rid of Mueller – ANY!

As the Washington Post recently reported, “Under the Justice Department regulations by which Mr. Mueller was appointed, the attorney general may fire the special counsel only for cause, such as misconduct. (Because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the Russia investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, who appointed Mr. Mueller, has the power to fire him.) But the president might demand that Mr. Rosenstein dismiss Mr. Mueller, or throw out the regulation and dismiss Mr. Mueller himself. Either decision would raise serious constitutional questions.

But honestly, Trump never pays attention to anyone or anything other than his ego and he is continually driven by his bully mentality. There is no doubt that he will continue to push the possibilities of finding a way to have Mueller removed.

Although he has not recently commented on Mueller, or the investigation, in public channels he is certainly working behind the scenes to further his ability to send Mueller packing. The proposed bills and the meeting of the Republican-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee were a clear warning to Trump to back off, but we know he won’t catch on to the signals being sent to him.

If Trump is indeed continuing to work behind the scenes against Mueller he had better watch himself – he doesn’t have a lot of allies left in Washington. As the Washington Post further stated, “Despite the committee’s approval, it’s not clear whether either bill will make it to the floor of the Senate for a vote. It’s also not clear whether either would receive enough votes to become law — let alone override a likely presidential veto. Even if one did, it’s an open question whether such a law would survive a constitutional challenge. And that’s before we ask whether there would be any point in passing such legislation in the first place. If Congress feels that it would be unacceptable for the president to dismiss the special counsel investigating him, it can respond to such an act with a mechanism already available: impeachment.

Could impeachment be in the Don’s future? At this point it has certainly been discussed by many of the Washington elite. Those who oppose Trump’s actions and have deep questions regarding the validity of his election will push for his removal if the proper time and findings lead them to that possibility. Trump had better watch his back in regards to this issue. The powerful forces at work in Washington are watching and waiting to precisely strike when given the chance.
