If you know a Trump supporter who still thinks we should “give him a chance,” then I hope you share THIS with them.
Robert Reich just released a video explaining that there are already four – with a fifth in the works – grounds of impeachment which could potentially be used to remove the president from office.
FIRST: In taking the oath of office, a president promises to faithfully execute the laws and the constitution. Reich points out that Trump is failing to fulfill the promise by accusing President Obama of “undertaking an illegal and impeachable act,” with zero evidence to support the accusation.
SECOND: Article I Section 9 of the Constitution forbids government officials from taking things of value from foreign governments. Reich says Trump is making huge amounts of money by “steering foreign diplomatic delegations to” his Trump International Hotel, and points out that Trump is positioned to make a large amount of money from China’s recent approval of a slew of Trump trademark applications. Reich says this approval came about directly as a result of decisions Trump has made regarding China since becoming president.
THIRD: The 1st Amendment to the Constitution bars any law “respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” Clearly, the travel ban Trump has imposed on Muslim-majority countries violates that provision.
FOURTH: The 1st Amendment also bars “Abridging the freedom of the press.” Trump has ignited a virtual war against the press by labeling them an “enemy of the people.” This, coupled with his habit of choosing who to invite to news conferences based on whether or not they provide favorable coverage, amounts to an unprecedented is in clear violation of this 1st Amendment provision.
FIFTH: A fifth possible ground – if evidence is there: Article III Section 3 of the Constitution defines “Treason against the United States” as: “adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” Reich points to the growing evidence that Trump colluded with the Russian government in an effort to win the 2016 election.
Reich points out that as long as Republicans control the House of Representatives – where Articles of Impeachment must be initiated – it is unlikely that Trump will be impeached. This makes it all the more imperative that Democrats remain diligent and continue the already-swelling grass-roots efforts to retake both houses of Congress next year!
