President Donald Trump is known to surround himself with sycophants and brown-nosers. Speaking out against one’s boss is never a good idea, but when Trump is your boss, it amounts to career suicide. Which makes Dr. Dean Winslow’s comments so surprising.
Dr. Winslow is Trump’s nominee for the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. Prior to his nomination, Dr. Winslow was a professor and vice chair of medicine at Stanford University, and is also a retired United States Air Force Colonel.
Responding to questions about the mass shooting in a Texas Church earlier this week during his Senate confirmation hearing, Dr. Winslow commented, “I’d also like to, and I may get in trouble with other members of the committee, just say how insane it is that in the United States of America a civilian can go out and buy a semiautomatic assault rifle like an AR-15″.
President Trump, on the other hand, is a YUGE supporter of the 2nd Ammendment. Trump has stated that no one need fear any action from him regarding the right to bear arms during his presidency. His campaign website includes a defense of gun ownership, saying “The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed upon. Period.”
Yet Trump nominated Dr. Winslow for a top position with the Department of Defense. One wonders is Trump was aware of Dr. Winslow’s views on gun control prior to nominating him, or if Trump was as surprised as we were. Regardless, now that Donald Trump realizes that Dr. Winslow isn’t going to tow the line, the real question is how long until he’s unceremoniously dismissed.
