Trump’s tumultuous week of missteps and mistakes has not just caught the attention of the top GOP, it has begun to stir panic. NBC news reported earlier that high-profile Republicans and Trump supporters including Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, and RNC Chair Reince Priebus plan to meet with Trump and perhaps his children to try and restore the campaign to a more disciplined affair. While Priebus has worked to paint a picture of party and campaign unity, Gingrich has characterized the Trump campaign as “unacceptable.” He went on to tell Fox News he believed Trump’s behavior was “very self-destructive . . . Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league.”
Fox news downplayed the seriousness of the possible meeting, saying it would be more accurately characterized as a “strategic review” But however the meeting might be characterized, it comes in a week when Trump’s most severe criticisms seem to be coming from the conservative ranks, rather than from anyone from the left. It’s hard not to imagine why, when he continues to create myriads of divisiveness within the GOP, publicly speaking out against the campaigns of House Speaker, Paul Ryan, and Arizona Senator (and American hero) John McCain.
So we ask, could you trust Trump with the nation’s security codes? If we noticed the alarms were firing and missiles lifting, could be sure it wasn’t because a rival leader didn’t just heave an insult at Mr. President?
