MSNBC’s Brian Williams explored the ties between former Republican United States Senator, Bob Dole, and the Donald Trump transition team. While what has been uncovered has received sharp criticism, we believe it can be called nothing less than scheming.
According to NBC News’s Kristen Welker, a Trump transition team member has confirmed a story the Wall Street Journal broke earlier this week that Bob Dole facilitated the highly-controversial phone call between Donald Trump and the President of Taiwan. The phone call was the first contact a United States President (or president-elect) has had with a Taiwanese president in over 40 years, and marks a new era in Chinese/American diplomatic relations which already sees a worried China amidst already-rising tensions between the two countries.
In an interview with Dole, he admitted, “It’s fair to say that we may have had some influence.”
After a volatile election season in which Trump repeatedly called out China, at one point even comparing their actions toward the United States as “rape,” they are understandably concerned about the direction diplomacy might go under an unpredictable Trump presidency. According to the WSJ, “At the White House, officials fielded multiple calls from Chinese officials over the weekend in which China complained about Mr. Trump’s actions and said it needs stability and predictability in its relationship with the U.S., a senior Obama administration official said.”
To say that the relationship between China and the United States is complicated might be a huge understatement. And the stakes are high – there are already growing tension due to China’s growing economic influence and military might, and their recent “island-building” in the South China Sea, already the cause of serious alarm to friendly neighbors.
Republicans MUST demand that Trump change his tone and his penchant toward reaction, and instead grow into a role of diplomacy, understanding, and communication. The prevention of global war depends on it…
