In an attempt to validate the chaos and raucous behavior of the last Presidential election, Donald Trump established the Commission on Election Integrity.
However, a recently released index of information regarding the business of the commission illustrates it’s partisan nature and the depth of personal information it is reviewing for every American voter. This new information has a lot of people asking if the commission is illegally conducting it’s business outside the scope of the law
The job of the commission, headed by VP Mike Pence and created in May 2017, is to “…study vulnerabilities in voting systems used for federal elections that could lead to improper voter registrations, improper voting, fraudulent voter registrations, and fraudulent voting. The Commission will also study concerns about voter suppression, as well as other voting irregularities. The Commission will utilize all available data, including state and federal databases.”
This was done in response to one of the many Campaign promises Trump made prior to being elected. However, he has micro-managed this body, through Vice President Pence, in order to slant the political ideology of the group by appointing as many conservatives as possible. In fact, one member of the commission – Hans von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation requested – via a letter – that NO Democrats be appointed to the committee.
The committee is required to be bi-partisan in nature. According to the Federal Advisory Committee Act, “…the membership of an executive advisory commission be ‘fairly balanced in terms of the points of view represented and the functions to be performed’.” To label Trump’s committee as “fairly balanced” would be laughable! He and the White House staff have done everything possible to make sure this “pet project” of Donald’s is stacked with the most conservative individuals they can find – those who feel that our voting system should be more restrictive and present more obstacles to those of a more liberal persuasion.
The legal issue at hand is focused on the inner workings of the commission. To date several different lawsuits have been filed. The lawsuits allege that any members of the committee who are affiliated with the Democratic Party are being kept out of certain decision making processes and that important documents and research are not being shared with the Democratic commission members – and therefore are not required to be part of public record.
This method is creating a small inner cabal of Republicans that are operating outside the boundaries of prescribed law for a commission of this sort. Honestly, is anyone surprised? This seems to be general operating protocol for Trump and his team of White House deplorables.
