Trump signals to America his plan to end bi-partisanship

In a truly unprecedented move, Donald Trump today tweeted that he thinks a government shutdown would be good for the nation.

Trump’s tweets read: “The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good “shutdown” in September to fix mess!”

Trump was upset that the budget process is subject to Senate filibuster, requiring a 60 vote threshold in order to move the legislation to the Senate floor for a vote. Though Republicans control both houses of Congress, because their Senate majority is very small, it would require a number of Democrats to vote with them to pass a budget.

The Senate therefore passed a temporary spending bill that lasts through September, which will pass through reconciliation. It is a continuing resolution and not subject to filibuster.

The pushback from Democrats was swift. Brian Schatz (D – Hawaii) said, “The President just called for a government shutdown this fall. No President has ever done anything like this.” Representative Eric Swalwell (D – CA) added, “Nope. Our country needs a White House shutdown. Working on it.”
