That’s what the president is, that’s how we can describe his presidency, and when people look back on this dark chapter in American history, that’s the word they will use to describe him – loser.
President Donald Trump does not have the best track record when it comes to endorsing candidates. Trump backed Ed Gillespie in Virginia’s governor race, even doing robo-calls for the candidate. Gillespie lost.
In Alabama’s senate race, Trump supported appointed Republican Senator Luther Strange, campaigning in person on Strange’s behalf. Strange lost, leading to the current Alabama senate race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones. But blindly backing the republican candidate isn’t as easy this time.
Roy Moore has been accused of gross sexual misconduct, including assaulting a 14 year old girl when he was 32. Reports of him being banned from the local mall and police keeping watch over him at high school football games in order to keep the cheerleaders safe from Moore have been widespread. Moore was leading in polls before the accusations came to light, but is now behind by about 8 points.
This puts Trump in a precarious position. Trump likes to be viewed as a winner, and as someone who can motivate the people to vote for his Republican party. So far, he’s 0-2 in that arena.
While backing Roy Moore is the obvious move for Trump, it could come with some serious backlash. If Moore loses the senate race, Trump could possibly be perceived as a loser by association, and Trump’s ego can’t tolerate that.
So Trump has decided to casually support Moore. He has tweeted that Moore would be a much better choice for the seat than the liberal Jones, but has refrained from actually giving any specific reasons why Moore would be the better choice other than Moore’s party affiliation and keeping a Democrat out of the Senate.
And according to the White House, Trump has made the decision not to visit Alabama in the two weeks before the upcoming election, apparently deciding a hands-off approach would be best.
So here is a case of Trump supporting the Republican Moore in only the most perfunctory of ways. God forbid Trump put all his eggs in a loser’s basket. That would make Trump a loser by association, and his massive ego just wouldn’t be able to handle the blow.
