In a recent interview, Rep. Buddy Carter (R. GA), a longtime ally of Big Pharma, said that should the GOP win back congressional majorities in the midterm elections this November, they would work to undo President Joe Biden’s and Democrats’ work to lower prescription drug prices. Republicans already  stripped out provisions to cap insulin costs in the legislation.

Carter said:

“With the prescription drug pricing, that’s something I’m very interested in as a pharmacist. And I’ve been asking my colleagues ‘how are we going to undo that when we get into the majority?’”

Carter (a former Georgia pharmacist himself) brags about being in the pocket of big pharma on his own website.  He either doesn’t realize that he’s outing himself as a puppet, or he just doesn’t care because of the likely payday:

“Securing our pharmaceutical supply chain is critical to combating the rise of foreign adversaries like China and protecting patients here at home. As a Georgia pharmacist for four decades, I saw firsthand what timely access to affordable medications means for patients. I’m proud to be working across the aisle in establishing the Domestic Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Caucus, because national security and pharmaceutical independence impact all Americans, regardless of political party.”

Carter also made other headlines recently, when he responded to the news of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s retirement with “Good riddance,” despite the former’s decades of honorable service in public health.

Democrats in Carter’s district have sharply criticized him for his positions. Mayor Van Johnson and House District 1 candidate Wade Herring both spoke out against Carter at a recent press conference,  blasting him for his stances on abortion, expanding health care, and voting against capping the cost of insulin.

Herring noted:

“Mr. Carter has advocated for criminalization of abortion, with no exceptions including rape, incest and the life of the mother. He’s opposed the expansion of healthcare … he opposed the insulin cap, I mean everything he is against that would help the working folks and families of this district.”
