Speaking to CNN “New Day” host Brianna Keilar, Alex Holder, the director of the Trump Documentary “Unprecedented,” spoke about the clip he believes is the “smoking gun” that the Jan. 6 committee needs to consider when looking at Trump’s role in the Capitol insurrection.
Keilar: “Turning back to an interesting moment from your documentary, I want to know how he described insurrectionists, after the fact, after January 6. Here it is.”

Holder: Can we talk for a minute about January 6?
Trump: “Yeah…well, it was a sad day, but it was a day where there was great anger in our country, and people went to Washington primarily because they were angry with an election that they think was rigged. A very small portion, as you know, went down to the Capitol, and then a very small portion of them went in.
But I will tell you they were, uh, angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election, because they’re smart, and they see, saw what happened, and I believe that was a big part of what happened on January 6.”
Back to Keilar: “Did you ever get the impression that he understood, January 6, what happened, was bad?”
Holder: “Everything I’ve watched in the clip, it gives me sort of goosebumps, because he’s condoning the situation. I mean, he’s saying the reason January 6 happened, is because this group of people went in the Capitol because they were smart, and believed the election was stolen. Well, the only person that told them the election was stolen, was him. He is drawing a clear line between his lie and the events of January 6. He’s not making any claims about conspiracies or that it was people on the left pretending to be Trump supporters.
He’s actually admitting, categorically, those people that went in supported his position that the election was stolen and was essentially stolen and was essentially trying to do something about it, i.e. attempting to assassinate the Vice President…so, if people are looking for a smoking gun, that’s him admitting it, categorically, in Mar-a-Lago, two months or so after the events took place.”
Keilar: “Would you say he has affection there, for them?”
Holder: “Absolutely. He called them smart. It’s extraordinary.”
