According to a report by The Hill, despite President Joe Biden claiming he will run for a second term in 2024, many Washington insiders believe Biden, who will be 81 in November of that year, is unlikely to go through with running again.

In the event he does decide to bow out in 2024, these are likely the top five picks to win the Democratic nomination:

Vice President Kamala Harris
The Hill believes that Biden’s VP has the visibility and the name recognition to “give Democrats another chance at breaking the vaunted glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to be elected president.”

But Harris is not a sure bet to win the nomination. She has been tripped up by a rash of negative headlines since she assumed the role of vice president and her poll numbers have taken a hit.

But, according to one strategist, “She has fallen short of expectations,” adding “I don’t think she has a lock on the nomination and she’ll have some viable competitors.”  Harris’ current approval rating currently hovers around 40%.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg
Buttigieg surprised the nation in 2020 with his seemingly out-of-nowhere campaign.

The Hill claims that “Democratic strategists say he would be well positioned for a 2024 run. Still, even as a Cabinet secretary, some still wonder if he has enough political chops to make the leap to the Oval Office.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren
Warren remains a popular pick with many Democrats but claims that she has no plans to run in 2024, telling NBC “I’m not running for president in 2024, I’m running for Senate…President Biden is running for reelection in 2024 and I’m supporting him.”

Senator Bernie Sanders
While many think that Sanders days of running for the White House are over, last month he put himself back into the conversation when some of his aides circulated a memo that suggesting that he wasn’t completely closed to another run at the Presidency.

The memo, penned by Sander’s 2020 campaign manager Faiz Shakir, read “Sen. Sanders has not ruled out another run for president, so we advise that you answer any questions about 2024, with that in mind.”

Senator Amy Klobuchar
Klobuchar’s 2020 run was highly unsuccessful, but many strategists believe that she could benefit from moderate Democrat votes should Biden decide not to run.

One strategist noted that the Minnesota Senator seemed to be suggesting a possible run in 2024 during a recent speech, saying “It was one of the very first signs that some folks had started to eye the next election…Because few people think Biden is going to run again.”
