As we get into the conviction and sentencing stages of the pro-Donald Trump rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the potential sentences are getting larger and larger. This week, an Iowa man was sentenced to 86 months in prison for assaulting a police officer during the violent insurrection attempt of that day, according to the Justice Department.

Kyle Young, age 38, of Redfield, Iowa, was part of a group who physically assaulted police officers in the Lower West Terrace of the Capitol, where some of the heaviest violence took place that day, according to court documents.  Young also brought his teenage sons along for the rioting fun.

Young was arrested in April of 2021, and subsequently indicted along with two co-defendants who are accused of participating in the same attack. In may of this year, Young pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers.

According to the sentencing memorandum, Young “aggressively assaulted and harassed a line of dramatically out-numbered” officers inside the Capitol, as he held a strobe light toward the police line, “pushed forward a stick-like object” and along with others, threw a large audio speaker toward them.

After that, Young and others assaulted an officer who was pulled into the riotous crowd and Young held the officer’s wrist and pulled his arm away from his body.  As the riots went on, Young also “made contact with” the helmet of a different officer who was pulled into the crowd.

Young will be placed on three years of supervised release after his prison term ends, and he also must pay restitution of $2,000.

Young, whose lawyers argued that he was “injected” with lies about the 2020 Presidential election that led him to participate in the Jan. 6 violence.  Contrary to that argument, however, Young posted frequently on his own social media accounts asking followers to join him in “stop the steal” events, like the one that directly preceded the Capitol breach.
